Grown siblings holding hands and walking across the bridge in an outdoor family photoshoot

There’s something pretty special about photographing families in Melbourne’s west and inner west. It’s relaxed, a little wild around the edges, full of character — and best of all, there are so many beautiful places where families can simply be themselves.

When you’re planning a family photography session, the location can make all the difference. Rather than standing in one spot and smiling at the camera, I love choosing places that give families room to wander, explore, play and connect. That’s where the real magic happens — the big belly laughs, muddy little feet, cuddles on the go and those in-between moments you might not even realize I’ve captured.

And Melbourne’s west has no shortage of gorgeous backdrops to make that happen.

Newport Lakes: A Little Pocket of Nature

Yarraville: Character, Greenery & Plenty of Personality

Is one of those locations that feels like a little escape from the everyday.

With winding paths, beautiful greenery, lakeside views and plenty of natural textures, there’s lots to explore during a family session. Kids can run ahead, look for ducks, collect treasures and discover little pockets of bushland while parents get to slow down and enjoy being together.

The variety here also means we can capture a lovely mix of photographs — from wide, scenic portraits surrounded by greenery to close-up cuddles and those completely unplanned moments that tell your family's story.

Has such a distinct personality. There’s the village atmosphere, leafy streets, beautiful old homes and pockets of greenery — making it a wonderful option for families who want something with a little more urban character.

Family photography doesn’t have to mean finding the biggest park or the most dramatic landscape. Sometimes the beauty is in the everyday — walking down a familiar street, stopping for a cuddle, letting the kids lead the way or grabbing a little treat together.

Yarraville gives us the opportunity to create photographs that feel connected to your family's life and personality, rather than simply looking like another day at the park.

Avondale Heights: Rivers, Open Spaces & Golden Light

Williamstown: A Little Bit of Everything

Around Avondale Heights offers another beautiful setting, particularly for families who love a little more space to move.

The river, open grassed areas, trees and walking trails create a wonderfully versatile backdrop. There’s room for the kids to run, race each other, throw a ball or simply explore while we wander together.

And then there’s the light.

As the afternoon rolls on, the river and surrounding landscape can take on that gorgeous warm glow that makes outdoor family photographs feel soft, relaxed and timeless.

It’s a location where we can let the session unfold naturally rather than rushing from one posed photo to the next.

Williamstown is one of my favourites when it comes to variety.

You can have the water, beach, parks, old trees, wide-open spaces and beautiful views all within a relatively small area. It gives us so many opportunities to move, explore and create a gallery that feels full of life.

There’s something lovely about photographing families near the water, too. Kids can investigate the shoreline, collect shells, run along the beach or simply enjoy the freedom of having space around them.

And while they’re busy having fun, I’m there capturing the little things — a hand held, a cheeky grin, a spontaneous cuddle, siblings chasing each other or the way your little one looks at you when they think nobody is watching.

Those are often my favourite photographs.

The Beauty Is in the Variety

One of the things I love most about photographing families around Melbourne’s west and inner west is the sheer versatility.

We have rivers and creeks, lush bushland, lakes, open fields, leafy streets, beaches and pockets of urban charm. That means your session doesn’t have to fit into a particular mould.

Maybe your kids are happiest running wild through the trees.

Maybe they love throwing rocks into a creek.

Maybe they’re water babies who would happily spend the afternoon exploring the shoreline.

Or perhaps your family is happiest simply walking, chatting, playing and having a laugh together.

Whatever your version of fun looks like, we can work with it.

Let’s Keep It Fun

I’m a big believer that the best family photographs happen when nobody is trying too hard.

You don’t need to know what to do with your hands. Your kids don’t need to sit perfectly still. And nobody needs to spend an hour saying “cheese”.

Instead, I’ll give you little prompts, games and things to do together so that the session feels more like an afternoon out with your family than a formal photoshoot.

We might run, tickle, explore, have races, play a game or simply wander and chat.

And while you’re busy having fun, I’ll be watching for those fleeting moments — the genuine smiles, the belly laughs, the quiet cuddles and all the beautiful chaos in between.

Because ultimately, that's what I want your photographs to bring back to you.

Not just what your family looked like, but what this season of life felt like.

So if you’re looking for a family photography location in Melbourne’s west or inner west, there are so many beautiful possibilities right on our doorstep.

From Newport Lakes to Avondale Heights, Yarraville to Williamstown, we can find a location that suits your family, gives your kids room to be kids and creates a gallery filled with genuine, heartfelt moments.

Come as you are, bring the kids, and let’s have some fun.
